Already Is My Favorite Word

I was working with a client the other day who said ‘I can just trust the process,’ regarding utilizing the tools she’d been given in one of our Kiran Trace classes. However, she quickly  pointed out that the words ‘trust the process’ weren’t quite right. She really wanted to find the right words, but we agreed—they all implied a doer utilizing the tools—whether we were ‘implementing’, ‘following’, or simply just ‘trusting’ the process.

What we discovered was that there was already a process occurring—an evolutionary process, a body process, etc.

Really, it was Life’s process. And it was already being done.

Later, I was talking to a friend about how the word ‘tool’ also implies something separate from us that we pick up and apply.. and how that doesn’t quite describe Kiran’s tools (check out her book Tools for Sanity), because the tools are already here, already inside of us, occurring with no action on our part.

Most fundamentally, the tools are a noticing of what Life is already made of, of what is already happening—right in front of our eyes—that had previously gone unnoticed.

After these chats I realized again how much I love the word already because it describes the essence of reality, of what IS. Truth, clarity, fulfillment, love, peace, information, innovation, solutions, insights etc—these things are already right here. The word ‘already’ helps to cut the legs out from under the doer, the seeker, the achiever—i.e. the various separate selves—from heading out to get something, do something.

For a chronic doer like me, this realization is an immense relief.

The rule of ‘already’ goes for every little thing. We want a hot dog and a beer. Or a salad and a sun bath. The desire itself is already true by the time we notice it. It occurs TO us—popping into awareness, out of the moment. It just… IS. And then, right in the moment we want a hot dog, we remember the place down the street that has the best Chicago style dogs (of course ;) ). The hot dog place was already there. The memory was already there, the impulse was already there. We may even already be walking in that direction.

What occurs is an increased awareness of what is already the case. As Kiran Trace says, ‘Life has already signed off on it.’

There’s not even creating in the way we think of it. We hear a lot about the ‘co-creation’ of life. It’s a big buzzword in spiritual circles. But big creator types don’t describe their experience this way. No matter the genre—whether it’s Aretha Franklin, Steve Jobs, Tesla, or Frida Kahlo—they say the same thing, essentially. The inspiration came to them. It was already there—the song, the painting, the iPod, the alternating current, the recipe (‘Let nature take care of it,’ as the Buddhist monk Jeong Quan says, on Chef’s Table). All these things.. already there. The person just listened, as the thing pixelated out of the moment.

The relief in this! Because as nouns—as ‘creators’ or ‘doers,’ there is so much pressure to ‘conjure’—to effort, in order to create something in the world—versus effortlessly receiving something that is already here, ready to come through us (see my last blog post There Are No Nouns).

I work with this truth daily with my clients. I talk with one client about his musical acumen. Or another about her home decoration. Another about the direction of their business. With each one, the channel is already there—the eyes to see a beautiful furniture arrangement or hear a new chord progression. The images already beaming from the iCloud of ideas. Moreover, stopping the search (for the outfit, the song, etc) found the client or friend discovering the song, the outfit, the business idea.. or even the person they wanted to date!

If we are searching, we are missing the moment—the already-ness of all that is, of all that we are seeking. Recently in my world—on this big adventure with a big piece of land, I noticed some solutions for storage during rainy season that were literally sitting under my nose—but because I was thinking I needed to find them (searching for them, doing something) they had gone unseen.

On the day I was just standing around ‘doing nothing,’ they were found.

And this is the moral of the story—our interest in finding blocks our already having. Our attempt to get it right keeps us from hearing what IS right. This is a lifelong practice of being instead of doing, receiving versus creating. Of trusting life, versus our mind.

So, what you want is yours for the taking. You want love? It’s already here. Awakening? Already here. Truth? Here. Peace? That too. This is incredibly frustrating for the mind to hear. My mind has been utterly convinced that there is something to do, that peace or love is not yet available for me. The mind is so sure there is a contingency for everything—a ‘do-this-then-get’ scenario. A noun that is going to take action. But just for the moment, would you consider that it’s already here? The work is already done? The search is over?

Here are some pointers I use with myself and my clients to help discover the already-ness of Life. Ultimately, it’s something that can’t be articulated. But I can point to it. And you can go where the pointers point, and see for yourself.

Some ‘Already’s’ for your consideration:

  • You are already Awareness/Oneness/God/Life/Source. It’s already done.

  • You are already in heaven. (I’ll say ‘You’re dead. You made it!’) Now what?

  • Silence is already here, already holding you.

  • You are already being lived, breathed, evolved, held, cuddled, loved, accepted, seen, adored, wanted, walked, renewed, gifted, cleansed.
